Yes, "Oh My Godmother!" is a gay musical.
Yes, it stars a handsome young gay man in the Cinderella role and a drag queen as his fairy godmother. And yes, much of the dialogue includes high-pitched lisps.
But, as "Oh My Godmother!" writer, director and composer Ron Lytle insists at every rehearsal:
"It's not that kind of musical!"
That's been Lytle's automatic comeback to presumptions that "Oh My Godmother!" is all about muscular men in chaps, or that it preaches the politics of gay marriage.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
The hook for "Oh My Godmother!" - which plays through July 26 at the Zeum Theater - has little to do with all those new marriage certificates at City Hall.
